141,000 hectares were grown in the UK in 2016. Average yield is about 7 tonnes per hectare. The main market is milling and feed and current prices are around £115 per tonne. Oats have a lower summer heat requirement and greater tolerance of rain than other cereals, such as wheat, rye or barley, so are particularly important in areas with cool, wet summers, such as Northwest Europe and even Iceland.
